Google announced that Smart Shopping campaigns, which are campaigns connected to a merchant’s inventory catalog, will be folded into its new Performance Max product by the end of the year.
FREMONT, CA: Several new technologies to improve Google's shopper conversion rate have been released. A "Trusted Store" label can be earned by merchants who meet specific criteria for shipping speed, delivery costs, and return policies. When the same or similar things are cheaper or more expensive elsewhere online, a service called Price Insights alerts vendors. Aside from its search engine traffic and those who go from Search to Maps to discover a real-world business, Google hasn't become a significant shopper channel despite years of investment and re-orgs. The Pricing Insights are offering, and the Trusted Store icon assists retailers in aiding Google by making its shopper channel slightly more slippery.
Performance Max is Google's newest shopper marketing initiative, which debuted in 2020 and was made available to all advertisers in November of last year. Google solidifies its first-party media and advertising empire, and Performance Max is part of that trend. Performance Max advertisements cover Gmail, YouTube, and Maps rather than the usual search and sponsored product ads employed by online businesses. Advertiser dollars are funneled based on Google's AI-powered algorithmic products.

Google’s senior director of product management for retail advertisements said that merchants utilizing Performance Max can track if someone shops using product evaluations on YouTube or email newsletters. Before going to Maps to discover a nearby business carrying a product, some customers get retargeted on the Google display ad network. With the new Performance Max features, retailers can take an even more granular approach and integrate their consumer values into the system. A consumer who returns frequently or buys the same item in multiple sizes expecting to replace it is usually a less valued target than someone who has never born anything or a new customer whose lifetime worth is unknown.
For instance, Chico is a Performance Max pilot advertiser with several women’s clothing businesses in its store: White House Black Market, Soma Intimates, and the iconic Chico's. Kimberly Grabel, SVP of marketing, pointed out that each had its specific consumer funnel. If a customer spends 10 minutes or more browsing the Soma sleepwear category before making a USD 300 purchase, the customer is likely to have a more excellent lifetime value than another USD 300 basket that was significantly discounted. If Soma looks up that customer's buying history, it might notice that they've exclusively made purchases during drastically reduced sales.
